Discover the Thrill of Sled Hockey with Our Local Team
Have you heard about sled hockey? This incredible sport was invented in Sweden as an accessible way for individuals with limited mobility to experience the joy of skating and hockey. Today, sled hockey is thriving globally, including here in our community, thanks to our local team—the Kraken-affiliated sled hockey team.
Practicing and playing at the Kraken Community Iceplex (KCI), this team is more than just a group of athletes. They are a welcoming community that embraces all players, whether they have mobility challenges or are able-bodied. The team has grown significantly in recent years, nearly doubling its practice attendance from an average of 12 participants last season to 21 this year—a testament to their inspiring camaraderie and growing popularity.
Their March calendar is packed with exciting events, including:
– Regular practice at KCI on March 2nd.
– A home game against the BC Eagles on March 9th.
– Participation in B.C.’s Provincials on March 15th & 16th.
– A game in Portland on March 22nd.
– Travel to Reno for the Reno Rumble Tournament (March 28th–30th), where they’ll strive for their first tournament win.
– Additionally, the team will support the Seattle Adaptive Sports fundraising gala on March 30th for those who aren’t traveling to Reno.
With two tournament placements in second place this season, they’re determined to reach the top and continue inspiring everyone through their dedication and teamwork.
Sled hockey isn’t just for watching—it’s for trying! Team members warmly welcome newcomers, offering an unforgettable opportunity to experience the sport firsthand. Derek Peschel, a SkateJourneys participant, tried sled hockey during a practice and shared, “It’s a lot of fun. The team members support each other and truly make everyone feel included.”
Join us in celebrating and supporting this remarkable team. Whether attending their games, trying sled hockey yourself, or cheering them on at events like the Reno Rumble or the fundraising gala, there are plenty of ways to connect and be part of their journey.
